 Introduction Technology and culture are two related ideas. The degree to which a society is culturally developed initially dictates the need for and instigates technological advancement, which in turn has an effect on the evolution of culture and increases its complexity and intricateness. Culture is defined in a variety of ways, but generally speaking, it is "the methods of thinking, the ways of behaving, and the material items that together make a people's way of life" (Macionis 54). Thus, culture refers to our beliefs, behaviors, and possessions. Culture comes in two flavors: material and nonmaterial. Everything developed by society's members that has a physical appearance—i.e., everything we can see or touch—is referred to as material culture. All of society's ideas and concepts that lack tangible characteristics are considered to be a part of nonmaterial culture.
